How You Taste and Smell

Today I will be talking about how you cannot smell or taste
food when you have a blocked nose.

When you have a blocked nose you cannot taste or smell
anything.

Kids have more papillae than adults.
Kids have approximately 10 000 papillae and adults have
approximately 5000 papillae.

The taste buds on your tongue is also known as the
papillae, by the papillae, there are microscopic hair-like
things called micro villi. Your tongue will send a message
to your brain to give you information if it is salty, sweet or
sour.

When you have a cold the way to your olfactory receptors
will be blocked by the snot inside you so the food odors
won’t be reaching the olfactory receptors for you to smell
the food. You won't be tasting or smelling anything while
eating. I have learned that a cold can make you lose taste
because the olfactory receptors were blocked.
